A is for... ammonite!

Ammonites are very common fossils in some parts of Britain. They are an extinct type of mollusc related to modern squid. 

 

Many years ago people who found ammonites thought they were:
 

Fossilised cow pats

Snakes, magically turned to stone

Crushed snail shells
