Z for zebra butterfly

Z is for... zebra butterfly!

Butterflies are large, colourful insects. They have a complicated life cycle, and spend the first part of their lives as caterpillars.

Fact:

Zebras use their stripes for camouflage, so that they can blend in with their environment. Zebra butterflies use their stripes in a very different way.

Do you know what their stripes are for?

The zebra butterfly's stripes are warning signs!

The black and yellow stripes warn birds and other enemies that they are not good to eat.

The colour patterns of many others butterflies copy the stripes of zebra butterflies - they want to trick their predators into thinking that they are the bad tasting zebra butterflies as well.
